What is a Triathlon Bicycle
If you are looking to get into triathlons you are going to need the proper equipment. That mountain bike or beach cruiser is not going to be helpful in your triathlon. Triathlon bikes are made to go faster and use the optimum amount of your energy to help you conserve for other parts of the triathlon. Triathlon bikes are also built to handle extremely well but don’t get it mistaken for a touring bike. You will sacrifice some handling for other benefits that we will explain below.
One of the primary differences between a road bike, touring bikes and with a triathlon bike is that the bike’s geometry is set to have a steep seat angle at 76+ degrees. The tube angle will also be less aggressive than road bikes with the top tube being shorter. Triathlon bikes are made for you to be able obtain and hold an aero position so you use less energy when riding. The aero position will help eliminate wind drag during the race. With reducing wind drag you will be able to go faster than you would be able to with the same energy. The proper position besides using less energy will help you cut time off of your bike ride. You should also be more comfortable in the position. Also with the forward position you are going to use more of the muscles in your hamstrings instead of your quadriceps. The reason for this is that you will use the muscles in your quadriceps when you are in the running part of the triathlon.
A triathlon bike is for people who enjoy competing in triathlons. You can look for other options but they are not going to get the job in the same way. Remember you are going to be getting a lighter bike and you need to have energy to save for the next part which is the run.
Just think of where you can find an advantage when using a triathlon bike. First off when you are on the bike you will be at an advantage in your position. You will be using less energy to go the same speed with other bikes. You will be able to maintain proper position helping you cut down time and giving you a better chance to win. The most beneficial point though is the fact that you will be using your hamstrings. When you are running the hamstrings will not be as beneficial as your quadriceps. This means that you will have an added advantage to many people throughout the race. Your quadriceps will be getting a break during the bike portion of the race and will be ready to go during the running faze.
Remember with a triathlon bike that eighty percent of your wind drag will come from your body. Spending time to learn how to get into a more aerodynamic body position will greatly increase the amount of speed you will be able to obtain. Remember to find a triathlon bike that is comfortable for you to use during the race and training.
